An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) is not optional — you need one, and it must be compliant. But here’s what most carriers miss: compliance is not a one-time box to check when you buy an ELD. It’s an ongoing obligation to monitor.

Which ELDs are legal?

FMCSA maintains a registered devices list of all ELDs that manufacturers have self-certified as meeting federal requirements. When you buy an ELD, it must be on that list at the time you install it.

This part is straightforward: before you purchase or deploy an ELD, check that list. But the compliance story doesn’t end there.

The monitoring obligation most carriers don’t know about

Here’s the critical part: FMCSA can revoke an ELD from the registered list at any time, even if it was fully compliant when you bought it. A device that worked yesterday can be removed tomorrow if FMCSA discovers it doesn’t actually meet the requirements, or if the manufacturer stops supporting it or admits to non-compliance.

You are responsible for knowing if your device has been revoked. If your ELD is removed from the list and you don’t replace it by the deadline, you’re operating without a compliant ELD — which FMCSA treats as an out-of-service violation.

This is not a hypothetical concern. FMCSA updates the registered list regularly, and devices have been removed due to manufacturer certification failures, unsupported hardware, or security vulnerabilities.

Current deadlines (2026)

If you’re running a non-registered ELD, you must replace it by August 23, 2026. Operating past that date with a device not on the list is a violation.
If an ELD you’re using gets revoked, you have until July 20, 2026 to replace it. After that date, operating with a revoked device puts you out of service.

The exact deadline depends on when the removal notice is published. If your device is revoked today, you get a grace period. But you need to know right away when a revocation happens.

How to monitor

The easiest way to stay ahead of revocations is to sign up for FMCSA’s ELD update notifications. FMCSA publishes notices whenever devices are added or removed from the registered list. If you receive updates, you’ll know instantly if your ELD is affected, and you’ll have time to plan a replacement.

Even if you don’t sign up for formal notifications, make it a quarterly habit to visit the registered ELD list and verify that your devices are still there. It takes five minutes and could save you from an unexpected out-of-service violation.

Compliance in practice

Your responsibilities:

At deployment: verify your ELD is on the registered list before you activate it.
Regularly (at least quarterly): check the registered list to confirm your device is still there.
If notified of a revocation: replace the device by the published deadline. Do not wait.
Keep records: document the date you deployed your ELD, which model it is, and the dates you verified it was on the registered list. If FMCSA ever questions your compliance, this paper trail proves you were diligent.
