Why this matters now

The DOT medical certification system is transitioning to electronic reporting (NRII — National Registry II). Drivers still get physical cards, but examiners must report results within 24 hours. A temporary exemption (through Oct 2026) lets drivers use paper cards for up to 60 days after the exam — but that window closes. If you’re managing driver certifications, you need to understand what’s changing and plan ahead.

Beyond that, hiring and retention are the biggest pain point for owner-operators and small carriers. You can’t run trucks without drivers. The rules here are federal and nonnegotiable, but the strategies — how you recruit, onboard, and keep people — are yours to own.
